The existence of all things emanates from the love of the Trinity

A reflection about God when reading the book of Genesis leads to one conclusion: We and all of creation have come about because God is love. From the beginning of everything, God is. Not only that, but God intended to extend that love into all things and all of creation, and it was found to be good. As we know, creation happened in stages emanating from the love of God. As each part of creation developed, it was found to be good because its source was God. Even though human beings were created with that same intent of love, we have always found that too good to be true. We failed to trust God’s intent, so we look for ways to secure ourselves, rather than trusting in the love of God. Somehow, we think money, power, influence or hatred will lead to security and we always find it wanting.

On this solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we have placed before us the three persons of God who are one. That oneness is anchored in love and emanates love. Let’s take a few moments to figure out what it means that our existence and the existence of all things emanate from the love of the Trinity.

Creation takes on the traits of the creator. We have a godly inheritance given to us because of who created us. Sometimes we find it so hard to believe that our inheritance flows from the intent and the will of God to bring all of His creation into Himself and to make us one. Sometimes we struggle with our own unique goodness in the sight of God.

Our God became flesh and dwelt among us. His incarnation gives our bodily existence a divine quality and reminds us of our eternal inheritance and the very nature of our lives. It can be hard for us to believe that life on earth can have the same effects, dwelling among others, as the life of Jesus did when He was here on earth. Jesus told us that He was sending us forth to do the things that He did and even greater things. Why do we lack confidence in our ability to be a godly presence here on earth? Why are we looking for someone else with greater power and influence to do the work that we have been asked to do by Jesus?

God has been made present to us as the gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to us. Those gifts take flesh as we speak in a language that others understand, even if they live a life so different from ours. Why is it so difficult for us to believe that love has the power to conquer hate? Why is it so difficult for us to believe that our willingness to embrace fear is more powerful than our isolation in the midst of our fear? Perfect love casts out all fear.

If this celebration of Trinity Sunday is still an intellectual exercise for us, try living it. Where there is a void or chaos, create oneness and love. If we find situations in which God has not taken flesh, be the hands and feet and heart of Jesus in that situation. If we find ourselves in a situation being governed by fear, create a mighty wind through the power of love that casts out fear and allows us to advocate for others who are afraid.
