A funeral Mass was to have been celebrated for Father John F. Blomberg Nov. 3 at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Church in Ferguson. Father Blomberg, a longtime administrator of several Catholic high schools, died Oct. 27. He was 84 years old.
Born in St. Louis, he attended St. Louis Preparatory Seminary and Kenrick Seminary. He was ordained in 1959 at St. Louis Cathedral by then-Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter. He earned a master’s degree from St. Louis University in 1965.
Father Blomberg’s first priestly assignment was as assistant pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish in St. Louis, while taking graduate studies. He then went to Our Lady of Fatima in Florissant as a part-time assistant pastor.
In 1969, he was named associate pastor of St. Richard in Creve Coeur and as assistant administrator at Mercy High School. In 1972, he became administrator of Rosati-Kain High School, while continuing as associate pastor at St. Richard. In 1976, he became associate pastor at St. Philip Neri in St. Louis, while continuing as administrator at Rosati-Kain. In 1978, he was appointed to the archdiocesan Priests’ Council and in 1979 became administrator of Rosary High School.
In 1983, Father Blomberg was named pastor of All Souls in Overland. From 1997-2005, he was pastor of St. Aloysius Gonzaga in south St. Louis. He then became senior associate pastor of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta in Ferguson, until his retirement to Regina Cleri home in 2008.
On his 50th anniversary to the priesthood, Father Blomberg noted that he always had a desire to become a priest. “The years of my priesthood have given me the opportunities to know and minister to so many wonderful, friendly and delightful individuals. I have no doubt that the Holy Spirit has guided me through all the years.”
Burial was to have been in Calvary Cemetery.
