OBITUARY | Father John L. Mayer

Father John Mayer

A funeral Mass for Father John L. Mayer will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Seven Holy Founders Church in Affton. Father Mayer died May 17 at the age of 86.

Born in St. Louis on May 25, 1939, he was the son of John and Laurine (Roth) Mayer. He attended St. Louis Preparatory Seminary, Cardinal Glennon College and the North American College in Rome. Bishop Francis F. Reh, rector of the North American College, ordained him to the priesthood on Dec. 16, 1964.

Father Mayer served as associate pastor at several parishes in the archdiocese, including St. Timothy in Affton (1965-66), St. Dominic Savio in Affton (1966-69), St. Ferdinand in Florissant (1969-74), Holy Redeemer in Webster Groves (1974-77), Sacred Heart in Crystal City (1977-79), Our Lady of Lourdes in University City (1979-83), St. Catherine of Alexandria in Riverview Gardens (1983-90) and St. Blaise in Maryland Heights (1990-92).

He was a pastor at St. Alphonsus in Millwood (1992-2001) and St. Joseph in Farmington (2001-02) and a senior associate pastor at St. Justin Martyr in Sunset Hills (2002-11). He retired in 2011 and served at St. John the Baptist in St. Louis until 2021, when he moved to Mary Queen and Mother Center in Shrewsbury.

Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
