St. Louis Review and Catholic St. Louis receive honors from Catholic Media Association

Publications and staff recognized with 16 awards at annual Catholic Media Conference in Baltimore

The St. Louis Review and Catholic St. Louis received a combined 16 awards from the Catholic Media Association, announced June 9 at the annual Catholic Media Conference held in Baltimore.

Jacob Wiegand received a first-place award for photographer of the year. Judges said his photos had an “outstanding range of events and emotions. Captures and frames images with high degree of technical skill. Photos bring subjects to life and say so much about the spiritual events and people captured.”

The St. Louis Review received honorable mention newspaper of the year for weekly newspapers. And Laura Kosta received an honorable mention for writer of the year (English).

First-place awards include:

• Best Feature Writing – Weekly: “A grandmother’s love, around the ‘breakfast club’ table,” by Laura Kosta

Second-place awards include:

• Best Feature Writing – Weekly: “We’re Catholic everywhere we go,” by Laura Kosta

• Best Reporting on the Celebration of a Sacrament: “Why Confession Matters,” by Laura Kosta, Jacob Wiegand and Abigail Witte

• Best Reporting of Social Justice Issues – Dignity and Rights of the Workers: “The Business of Being Catholic,” by Jennifer Brinker

Third-place awards include:

• Best Use of Graphics – Art or Graphics: “Why the Assumption Matters,” by Abigail Witte

• Best Story and Photo Package – By Two Individuals or More: “A grandmother’s love, around the ‘breakfast club’ table,” by Laura Kosta, Jacob Wiegand

• Best Photograph – Scenic, Still-life or Weather Photo: “Peaceful prayer,” by Jacob Wiegand

Honorable mention awards include:

• Best front page: St. Louis Review staff

• Best Use of Graphics – Best Original Illustration: “Witnesses to the Kingdom,” by Abigail Witte

• Best Coverage – Immigration: “Welcoming the Neighbor,” by Jennifer Brinker

• Best News Writing One Shot – International Event: “A time of need, an opportunity to serve,” by Laura Kosta

• Best Photograph – Feature Photo: “Steubenville adoration,” by Jacob Wiegand

Catholic St. Louis magazine also won a third-place award:

 Best Feature Article – Diocesan Magazines: “Fitness, Fellowship and Faith,” by Laura Kosta
