OBITUARY | Sister Dorothy Daly, CSJ

A funeral Mass for Sister Dorothy Daly was celebrated Oct. 20 at Nazareth Living Center Chapel in south St. Louis County. Sister Dorothy, a longtime educator, died Oct. 7 at Nazareth Living Center. She was 92 and a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 70 years.

She was born on Jan. 17, 1928, in Chicago to parents Tom and Florence Loretta (Winter) Daly, and baptized Florence Dorothy. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1950 and was received into the novitiate in 1950 as Sister Mary Malachy. She professed her final vows on Aug. 15, 1957.

Sister Dorothy earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and French from Fontbonne College in 1949, and a master’s degree in theology from the University of Notre Dame in 1971.

She began her ministry serving as a teacher for 22 years. She taught at St. Joseph Industrial School in Keshena, Wisconsin (1952-55); St. Teresa of Avila Grade School in St. Louis (1955-61); Sacred Heart Grade School in Muskogee, Oklahoma (1961-62); St. Catherine of Siena Grade School in Denver (1962-66); and Holy Cross Grade School in Champaign, Illinois (1966-70).

She remained in Champaign for the next four years and was the religious education coordinator at Holy Cross Grade School. From 1974 to 1986, she continued in that same role at St. Viator Parish in Chicago, and then became adult religious education director at St. John Vianney Parish in Houston from 1986 to 1991.

From 1992 to 2002, she served in a variety of office positions in the St. Louis area: counselor at Consumer Credit Counseling Service, data entry operator at Salvation Army, receptionist at St. Joseph Home for Boys and receptionist at the Academy of St. Louis for special education students.

Sister Dorothy retired in 2002 and had resided at Nazareth Living Center in St. Louis since 2013, carrying out her mission of prayer and presence.

Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
