MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY EVENTS
Peace and justice Mass
The 42nd annual Celebration and Archdiocesan Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice commemorating the birth and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, 4431 Lindell Blvd. in the Central West End of St. Louis. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson will celebrate the Mass and Father Arthur J. Cavitt, pastor of St. Nicholas Parish in St. Louis and director of the St. Charles Lwanga Center, will be the homilist. A reception and awards presentation for the MLK, Jr. Model of Justice honorees will be held in Boland Hall following the Mass. For information, call (314) 367-7929.
Chaminade jazz concert
Chaminade College Preparatory School will host the sixth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Friday, Jan. 12. The event will consist of jazz workshops throughout the day and a jazz concert in the evening, beginning at 7 p.m. The concert will feature headliner Good 4 The Soul as well as jazz bands from Chaminade and Riverview Gardens Senior High School. Concert tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance at www.chaminade-stl.org. Proceeds benefit the St. Joseph/St. Jude Scholarships for minority students at Chaminade. The workshops will include several area school bands: Chaminade, Riverview Gardens, Normandy High School, St. Dominic High School, St. Joseph School in Cottleville, Jackson High School (Jackson, Mo.) and Fort Zumwalt West Middle School.
MLK celebration in St. Charles
The Social Justice in Action Committee of Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service will host a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, at the Care Service, 4116 McClay Road in St. Charles. Keynote speaker will be Rep. Book club studies prayer
The winter book club of the Daughters of St. Paul will feature “When Women Pray” by Pat Kathleen Beckman. The book club, which began Jan. 3, meets 1-2 p.m. each Wednesday through Feb. 21 at Pauline Books & Media, 9804 Watson Road in Crestwood. Program on divorce
The Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide, a presentation on DVD featuring Catholic experts and lay men and women on the journey to healing, will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursdays from Jan. 11 to April 11 at Immaculate Conception Parish, 7701 State Highway N in Dardenne Prairie. Marian conference
The 19th annual Marian Conference will take place Jan. 12-14 at the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel. Speakers include Bishop Robert Hermann, Father Charles Becker, John Carpenter, Father Joseph L. Coffey, Father Vincent Lampert, Father Mitch Pacwa, SJ, Father Tom Sullivan, Father Robert J. Brockland, CM, and Wayne Weible. The conference will include viewing and praying with nearly 100 relics, Masses, adoration chapel, Rosary, Benediction and confessions.
