Obituary | Sr. Sarah Ann Mitra, CSJ
A funeral Mass for Sister Sarah Ann Mitra was celebrated Feb. 13 at Nazareth Living Center Chapel in south St. Louis County. Sister Sarah, 80, died Feb. 8.
Born Rose Marie Mitra in St. Louis, she attended Rosati-Kain High School, entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1954 and made first profession in 1957 and final profession in 1962.
Sister Sarah served as a nurse aide at Nazareth Convent from 1957-67 and at St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf in University City from 1969-74. She also served as a nurse aide in Michigan. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and, after a recovery period, she worked at Carondelet Day Care Center for a year before its closure in 1977. She worked as a tutor at St. Margaret of Scotland School in south St. Louis for a year before spending the next four years as a preschool teacher at St. Rita School.
Sister Sarah later was a volunteer at Our Lady of the Presentation School and at St. Joseph Outreach Center and the Carondelet Community Betterment Federation in south St. Louis. She moved to Nazareth in 2007.
Survivors include two brothers, Michael Mitra and Frank Mitra, and two sisters, Johanna Morris and Antoinette Wallace. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
