Obituary | Sr. Kathleen Barnes, OSU
A funeral Mass for Ursuline Sister Kathleen Barnes was celebrated Jan. 7 in Dallas.
Sister Kathleen, 95, died Dec. 1 in New Orleans. She served many years in the Archdiocese of St. Louis.
Born in Little Rock, Ark., her family moved throughout the country, and she attended eight elementary schools. She received her secondary education at Ursuline Academy in Dallas. Sister Kathleen entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1939 and professed vows in 1941. She received a bachelor’s degree in math from St. Louis University, a master’s degree in math from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in religious studies from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
Her ministries included teaching, school administration, parish adult education and Hispanic ministry.
Sister Kathleen taught at St. Joseph School in Clayton from 1943-46 and from 1950-56 and at Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood from 1960-66. She served as treasurer of Springfield College in Springfield, Ill. Sister Kathleen also served in Dallas, Galveston, San Antonio and Laredo, Texas.
In 2008, she moved to the Ursulines’ Queen of Peace Healthcare Community in Alton, Ill., where she lived until 2014, when she moved to Our Lady of Wisdom in New Orleans.
