A funeral Mass for Sister Janet Vietor was celebrated May 1 at St. Catherine Laboure Church in Sappington. Sister Janet died April 22 in St. Louis at age 71.
Born in St. Louis, she entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill, New York, in 1967 and received the name Sister Janet Therese. She professed her first vows in 1969 and final vows in 1978.
Sister Janet received a bachelor’s degree in education from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill in 1978 and a master’s degree in elementary education from Webster University in Webster Groves in 1993.
Sister Janet began her teaching ministry in New York. Upon her return to St. Louis, she was an elementary school teacher at Little Flower School in Richmond Heights from 1974-2006 and Our Lady of Providence School in Crestwood from 2009-11. From 2011-14, she served as administrative assistant at Nia Kuumba Spirituality Center in St. Louis. The Little Flower school community recognized Sister Janet’s 26 years of commitment to the mission of education at Little Flower School and the presence of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill since 1931.
Survivors include her sisters Joan Glassman, Kathy Kroll and Carol Zinko.
