Obituary | Sr. Edith Vogel, CSJ
A funeral Mass for Sister Edith Vogel was celebrated Feb. 9 at Nazareth Living Center Chapel in south St. Louis County. Sister Edith, 93, died Feb. 6.
Born in St. Louis, she graduated from St. Alphonsus Liguori (Rock) High School and then worked in the credit office of Ely Walker Dry Goods Co., transcribing dictation. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1947 and made first profession in 1949 and final profession in 1952. Sister Edith received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education/history from Fontbonne College in 1961.
Her first assignment was teaching in Chicago. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Sister Edith taught at Our Lady of the Presentation School in Overland, 1960-64; St. Margaret of Scotland School in St. Louis, 1964-71; and Holy Name School in St. Louis, 1971-74. She filled numerous roles, including principal, at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys from 1974-80.
Sister Edith then served the Sisters of St. Joseph community at Nazareth Convent as the administrative secretary in the 1980s and at the St. Joseph Provincialate as the receptionist/secretary for the St. Louis Province finance office in the 1990s.
Retiring in 1998, Sister Edith continued to serve her community as a volunteer at the St. Joseph Province House for the next 14 years. Sister Edith moved to Nazareth Living Center in 2012.
Burial was in Resurrection Cemerety.
