A memorial Mass for Sister Carol Haggarty was celebrated June 22 at the Oakwood chapel in Atherton, Calif. Sister Carol, 75, died June 18 in Atherton.
Born in Chicago, Sister Carol entered the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1961, took first vows in 1964 and made final profession in Rome in 1969. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Duchesne College in Omaha in 1968 and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from the National College of Education in Evanston, Ill., in 1975. She added a second master’s degree in counseling psychology at Loyola University in Illinois in 1979. Sister Carol served in Sacred Heart Schools in Chicago, Louisiana, Nebraska and St. Louis as educator. She also served in province administration in St. Louis and at the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, where she was assistant executive director, first at the office in Boston and then from 2004-12 in St. Louis.
Sister Carol also served on the boards of the Academy of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles and Villa Duchesne-Oak Hill School in St. Louis as well as at other Sacred Heart schools. She was area director for the St. Louis/St. Charles area for 13 years, and for a number of years she served as director of the Associates in St. Louis/St. Charles. Sister Carol was known for her technological expertise and also as an accomplished photographer.
Since 2012, Sister Carol served as assistant to the provincial. The role included managing the provincial office scheduling, hospitality and numerous other jobs. She moved to hospice care in Oakwood in March.
Survivors include her sister, Joan Eggers.
