A memorial Mass for Sister Alice Hein was celebrated Oct. 20 at Nazareth Living Center in south St. Louis County. A longtime teacher and principal, Sister Alice died Oct. 17 at Nazareth Living Center. She was 96 and a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet for 75 years.
Born in Unity, Wis., Sister Alice met the Sisters of St. Joseph at the Academy in Green Bay, Wis. After graduation from the academy, she and a friend took the train to St. Louis, where she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1941. She made final profession in 1947.
Sister Alice earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics in 1960 from Fontbonne College, and a master’s degree in elementary education administration in 1966 from St. Louis University.
She began her teaching ministry in Keshena, Wis., in 1944. In the St. Louis Archdiocese, she taught at Holy Name Grade School from 1953-58, St. Anthony of Padua School from 1958-60 and St. Barnabas School in O’Fallon from 1964-65. She also was principal and teacher at St. Rita School from 1960-63.
Sister Alice taught or was principal at schools elsewhere in Missouri and in Colorado. In 1991, she retired to the Kansas City, Mo., area. In 2001, she moved to Nazareth Living Center to serve in a ministry of prayer and presence.
Survivors include a brother, John Hein of Muskego, Wis.; and two sisters, Lois Hackmann of Bellevue, Neb., and Mary Ragen of Warrens, Wis. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
