OBITUARY | Sister Rita Joseph Mascorro, OSU
A graveside prayer service and burial for Sister Rita Joseph Mascorro, OSU, were held May 13 at St. Peter Cemetery in Kirkwood. She died peacefully May 6 at St. Andrew’s at Francis Place in Eureka. She was 85 years old. A memorial Mass is planned for June.
The daughter of Mercurio and Josefa Trevino Mascorro, she was born June 24, 1936, in Laredo, Texas. She entered the Ursuline community on July 15, 1959, and professed vows on Jan. 16, 1962. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Incarnate Word College.
Sister Rita Joseph ministered many years in Laredo, teaching at Ursuline Academy from 1965-68 and 1970-75, and at Our Lady of Guadalupe from 1968-69 and 1980-2007. She also taught at St. Angela Merici School in New Orleans from 1969-70, St. Joseph School in Springfield, Illinois, from 1975-78, and Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Galveston, Texas, from 1979-80.
One of nine children, Sister Rita Joseph is survived by a brother, Susano Mascorro.
