OBITUARY | Sister Marie Daugherty, OP

A memorial Mass for Sister Marie Daugherty, OP, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at Epiphany of Our Lord Church, 6596 Smiley Ave in St. Louis. A reception will follow in the school gym for family and friends.

Sister Marie of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, New York, died on Dec. 9 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent. She was 103 years old.

Born in Richwoods, Missouri, on Jan. 26, 1921, Margaret Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ellen (DeClue) Daugherty. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on July 16, 1938, and received the name Sister Marie. She professed her first vows in 1940 and final vows in 1945.

Sister Marie received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Webster University in St. Louis in 1948, a master’s in music education from DePaul University in 1963 and a certification in administration from Saint Louis University in 1965.

Sister Marie’s ministries included St. Agnes Home &School in Sparkill (teacher, music director and liturgist from 1938-41, 1947-51); St. Mark Elementary and High School in St. Louis (teacher from 1941-47, principal from 1965-75); Epiphany of Our Lord School in St. Louis (1951-54); Holy Rosary Elementary and High School in Monroe City, Missouri (1954-65); and music teacher at De Andreis High School in St. Louis (1975-76).

She was an editor with Lordship of Jesus Foundation (1976-78); editor at St. Pius X Abbey Pax Publications (1978-80); pastoral associate at St. Mark Parish (1975-80); coordinator at Merton House in St. Louis (1980-83); and pastoral associate at St. Cronan Parish in St. Louis (1990-92).

Sister Marie also served the Archdiocese of St. Louis’ Office of Charismatic Renewal in leadership formation (1983-90), pastoral ministry (1990-99) and as a volunteer (1999-2003).

Sister Marie was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mary Ellen, and her siblings Francis, Patricia, Lucy, Michael, Cecil, Thomas, Helen, J. Glennon and James. She is survived by her brother Joseph, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, relatives, Dominican Sisters, associates and friends.
