OBITUARY | Sister Donna Hyndman, OSU

A burial service was held for Sister Donna Hyndman, OSU, Dec. 20 at St. Peter Cemetery in Kirkwood. Sister Donna died Dec. 15 at St. Andrew’s at Francis Place in Eureka. She was 85 years old.

The daughter of Thomas and Anna Kaveney Hyndman, she was born May 23, 1936, in Decatur, Illinois. She entered the Ursuline community on July 15, 1954, and professed her vows on Jan. 16, 1957. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the College of New Rochelle, a master’s degree in English from Saint Louis University, and a certificate of the French language from Centre International D’Etudes Francaises.

She taught at St. Patrick School in Galveston, Texas, from 1960-61; Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood from 1961-67 and 1969-72; Ursuline Academy in Santa Rosa, California, from 1967-69; and Ursuline Academy in New Orleans, from 1973-77.

She served on the clerical staff of the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis from 1977-83. From 1984-2008, she served on the secretarial staff at the Ursuline Generalate in Rome. In 2009, she moved to New Orleans, where she served as assistant director of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. In August of this year, she moved to Mother of Perpetual Help in Shrewsbury.

Sister Donna is remembered as an especially kind and gracious woman. She loved art, music, gardening and travel, and was fluent in French and Italian.

She is survived by a sister, Susan Hyndman. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.
