OBITUARY | Sister Cecile Matushek, DC
A funeral Mass for Sister Cecile Matushek, DC, was celebrated March 19 in the Marian Chapel at The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. Sister Cecile, a Daughter of Charity, died March 14 at The Sarah Community. She was 81 years old.
Born on July 19, 1940, in Chicago to Elsie Blanche (Steinweg) and Paul Erhardt Matushek, Sister Cecile entered the Daughters of Charity on Jan. 25, 1959, and attended Marillac College in St. Louis (1960-63) earning a bachelor’s degree in English and Latin.
Sister Cecile served in education for the next 28 years as a primary teacher at St. Boniface School in Perryville (1963-68) and St. Stephen School in New Orleans (1968-73). Sister Cecile was a teacher (1973-77) and then principal (1977-80) at Central Catholic Community School in St. Louis. She earned her master’s degree in elementary education administration from Saint Louis University in 1977.
Sister Cecilia also was principal at St. Paul Apostle School in Pine Lawn (1980-83) and St. Boniface in Perryville (1983-88). She was then missioned to Prescott, Arkansas, where she served as Learning Club teacher for the Southern Arkansas Ministry (1988-91).
After completing her master’s in pastoral studies from Loyola University in New Orleans, Sister Cecile began a ministry in the healthcare field. In 1991, she was missioned to Providence Health Center in Waco, Texas, where she served as vice-president for mission integration from 1991-2017). In 2017, Sister Cecile was missioned to The Sarah Community in Bridgeton to serve in a ministry of prayer and volunteer in the gift shop until the time of her death.
Sister Cecile served on many boards in education and healthcare. She was the local community superior in St. Louis, Perryville and Waco, Texas.
She is survived by a sister, Elissa Rose Oldaker. Burial was in Marillac Cemetery in Normandy.
