Obituary | Msgr. Daniel M. Hogan

A funeral Mass for Msgr. Daniel M. Hogan, a retired educator and parish pastor, was to be celebrated Oct. 5 at Sacred Heart Church in Valley Park.

Msgr. Hogan, 89, died Sept. 30 at St. Agnes Home in Kirkwood. Born in St. Louis, he attended St. Louis Preparatory Seminary and Kenrick Seminary in Shrewsbury and was ordained by then-Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter in 1953 at Kenrick Seminary.

Following ordination, Msgr. Hogan was appointed assistant pastor of Visitation Parish and a year later at St. Liborius Parish, both in north St. Louis. He taught at Bishop DuBourg High School in south St. Louis from 1954-58, St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florissant from 1958-65 and Mercy High School in University City from 1965-66. During that time, Msgr. Hogan served as part-time assistant pastor of Visitation Parish and Nativity of Our Lord Parish in north St. Louis and All Souls Parish in Overland.

He was named associate pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Valley Park in 1966, St. Timothy Parish in Affton in 1967 and St. Adalbert Parish in north St. Louis in 1968. Msgr. Hogan was appointed administrator of Sacred Heart Parish in Valley Park in 1969 and pastor of the parish a year later. He was named pastor of St. Cecilia Parish in south St. Louis in 1984 and pastor of St. Barnabas Parish in O’Fallon in 1990.

He retired with residence at St. Agnes Home in 2013.

Msgr. Hogan played on many winning soccer teams throughout the St. Louis area. He was inducted into the Old Time Soccer Players Hall of Fame in 1990 and received the Catholic Youth Council’s Silver Boot Award in 1996 for his contributions to sports and good sportsmanship, especially in the game of soccer, in the St. Louis area.

While pastor at St. Barnabas, his parish established an outreach to Maria Reina Parish in La Paz Bolivia, the Padre Patricio Project. He led St. Barnabas during its 50th anniversary celebration, marked by the dedication of an outdoor Stations of the Cross meditation garden.
