Father David C. Sullivan, a longtime hospital chaplain in the archdiocese, died Jan. 24
Funeral arrangements were pending for Father Sullivan, 84, at the Review’s press time.
Born in Chicago, Father Sullivan attended Cathedral Latin School and St. Louis Preparatory Seminary in St. Louis before entering Kenrick Seminary. He was ordained in 1958 by Cardinal Joseph E. Ritter at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis.
Father Sullivan’s first assignment was as assistant pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in St. Louis. He then was named assistant pastor at St. Gregory Parish in St. Ann, Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in House Springs, St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Shrewsbury and St. Cecilia Parish in St. Louis. In 1972, he was named associate chaplain at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center and chaplain in charge of Catholic patients at Missouri Baptist Hospital. From 1975 to 2000 he also was chaplain of St. Louis Hospital. He remained chaplain of St. John’s Mercy Skilled Nursing Center and also served patients at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center and Missouri Baptist Medical Center for many years until moving to St. Agnes Home in Kirkwood several years ago.
Father Sullivan earned a master’s degree from St. Louis University in 1977. He called his vocation “the wonderful and blessed ordination to the priesthood by a kind and loving God” which brought with it “the conviction that Christ, through the Holy Spirit, is present with us always.”
