OBITUARY | Deacon George Miller

A funeral Mass for Deacon George W. Miller was celebrated April 16 at St. Wenceslaus Church in St. Louis. Deacon Miller died April 12 at the age of 91.

Deacon Miller was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Miller. They were the parents of Gwendolyn Hall, Joris Miller, Ceci Miller-Byram and Charlotte Lee. He was a grandfather of 11 and great-grandfather of 13.

He was a retired executive of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P), and he was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Deacon Miller was ordained on June 8, 1991, at the St. Louis Cathedral by Archbishop John L. May. He was assigned and assisted the pastor at St. Wenceslaus Parish in St Louis, where he served as a deacon until he entered into retirement status in 2017. He served his parish by presiding at baptisms, funeral services, weddings, and other liturgical functions such as Holy Hours and Stations of the Cross.

Deacon Miller served the Archdiocese of St. Louis as the director of the Office of the Permanent Diaconate from 1998-2005 and taught at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary.

Additionally, he served his parish community by visiting nursing homes and making Communion calls to people who are homebound. He was also the director of the Friends of the Missionaries of the Holy Family and served on the parish liturgy committee, the parish council, the men’s club and with the Knights of Columbus.

Burial was in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
