Magis Award
Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., is recognizing three outstanding alumni for their contributions to the St. Louis community. Scott and Kathleen Hummel, class of 1986, will receive the Magis Award, which each year recognizes outstanding member of the Rockhurst community who lives in or is from the St. Louis community who epitomizes the Jesuit core value of magis, or “more.” In 1993, the Hummels opened Our Little Haven to serve the needs of St. Louis’ most vulnerable populations with early intervention, community-based model for assisting the youngest victims of abuse, neglect, drug exposure and HIV/AIDS. Since opening, Our Little Haven has served more than 20,000 children and families. Rockhurst alumna Samantha Whited Fetcher, class of 2009, will receive the Faber Young Alumni Award for her leadership and service to her community. The awards will be presented at Rockhurst’s St. Louis Leadership Series luncheon Thursday, Nov. 8.
Nurse administrator honored
The St. Louis Suburban School Nurses recently honored Anne Fahland as the “School Nurse Administrator of the Year.” Fahland is the nurse coordinator for School Partnership Program, a special partnership between SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital and the Archdiocese of St. Louis supporting all Catholic schools throughout the archdiocese. She and her team coordinate health and vision screens, monitor the delivery of preventative care and services, and maintain a hotline for health-related inquiries from school personnel and nurses.

Good Shepherd Arts Center survey

A cardinals town
Msgr. Michael Witt, author of Saint Louis: The Story of Catholic Evangelization of America’s Heartland, will give a presentation about recently-released third volume of the four-part series — “The Age of Cardinals” — at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 at Pauline Books and Media in Crestwood. Marriage Encounter weekend
Worldwide Marriage Encounter is a weekend experience married couples of all ages. Couples will learn more about an effective communication tool during the weekend. Women’s retreat
Catholic speaker and author Kelly Wahlquist will lead “Gaze Upon Us,” a morning retreat as part of WINE (Women in the New Evangelization) on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 8 a.m.-noon at Immaculate Conception Parish in Dardenne Prairie. Wahlquist will lead retreatants through the infancy and early years of Christ as seen through the eyes of Mary and other women in the Gospels. Convent Camino vocations retreat
Catholic religious sisters of St. Louis will host a vocations retreat, the Convent Camino, Dec. 14-15 starting at the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet motherhouse at 6400 Minnesota Ave. in St. Louis. The Camino gives single women ages 18-40, the chance to visit with Catholic sisters in their houses and convent, learn about the sisters’ communities and ministries and join them in prayer and fellowship. Hospice volunteers
Heartland Hospice is seeking volunteers to provide one-on-one attention to people in the final phase of a terminal illness who are in need of companionship. Heartland volunteers offer support and practical, caring help, staying with a patient so family members can take a break, reading Scripture to patients or holding their hand.
