Goodbye to Stalwarts

La Posada Providencia said goodbye last month to Sisters Zita Telkamp and Margaret Mertens who, after more than 30 combined years of dedicated service, left for the Sisters of Divine Providence center in Pennsylvania. They have made an impact on the lives of thousands of asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants. La Posada Providencia in San Benito, Texas, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Divine Providence, is a ministry for people in crisis from around the world, who are seeking legal refuge in this country. The shelter staff provides a safe and welcoming home; mentors to promote self-sufficiency and cultural integration; and values which witness God’s Providence in our world. The former program director of La Posada Providencia, Sister Zita’s bishop nominated her for the 2013 Lumen Christi Award as a hidden hero in our midst and being the “Light of Christ” as well. Sister Zita served as teacher or principal at several area schools during her 50 years in education ministry, including Mount Providence School in Normandy (1954-56, 1958-60 and 1980-83), Ascension School in Normandy (1957-58) and North American Martyrs School in Florissant (1958-60). From 1995 through 2001, Sister Zita was a member of the provincial council for the St. Louis Province of the Sisters on Divine Providence. From 2001-07, she was the area coordinator of the Sisters of Divine Providence in St. Louis and also ministered at Room at the Inn, a shelter for homeless women and families in St. Louis County and a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Divine Providence. Sister Margaret taught at Ascension School in Normandy (1957-59; 1965-72) and Mount Providence School in Normandy (1962-65). She served as principal and teacher at St. John School in Imperial (1978-84). Sister Margaret served in various roles for her community and was a program director at La Posada Providencia.
