Sr. Sullivan

Sister Mary Charline Sullivan, a retired educator and archivist, died May 12 at Nazareth Living Center in south St. Louis County at age 91.

Born Loraine Mary Sullivan in St. Louis, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in 1946 and was received into the novitiate in 1947. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Fontbonne College in St. Louis in 1965 and a master’s degree in elementary education from Saint Louis University in 1971.

Sister Charline devoted nearly 40 years of ministry to elementary education.

She began teaching in 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri. She also taught in Michigan. In the 1960s, she taught in Rolla and Kansas City, Missouri, and at Notre Dame de Lourdes School in Wellston. From 1966-76, she was an administrator and teacher at Nativity of Our Lord School in St. Louis.

Sister Charline then served the Sisters of St. Joseph community at the St. Joseph Provincial House in St. Louis as the elementary education coordinator from 1976-78. She continued that position and was also the personnel service staff member from 1978-80.

In the 1980s, she returned to elementary education in St. Louis as an administrator at Nativity of Our Lord and St. Adalbert Schools. She completed her service in education at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in St. Louis.

For the next 29 years, from 1987 to 2016, Sister Charline worked in the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Louis Province archives in a variety of capacities. She was also an archivist for the Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph from 1992 to 2004.
