Obituary | Sr. Teresa Marie Hinrichs, SSND
A funeral Mass for Sister Teresa Marie Hinrichs, SSND, was celebrated on May 26 at Theresa Center, Sancta Maria in Ripa in south St. Louis County. She ministered in Catholic education for 57 years.
Sister Teresa Marie died May 12 at Veronica House, The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. She was 89 years old and a School Sister of Notre Dame for 67 years.
Born in St. Louis, she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1950 and was received into the novitiate in 1952. She professed first vows in 1953 and final vows in 1959. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the former Notre Dame College in south St. Louis County in 1965 and a master’s degree in elementary administration from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau in 1978.
Sister Teresa Marie began teaching first grade in Iowa. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, she taught at St. Aloysius School in Spanish Lake, St. Bernadette School in Lemay and Immaculate Heart of Mary School St. Louis. She also taught and was a principal in Scott City, Missouri. In Illinois, she taught in East St. Louis and Belleville and taught and was a principal in Breese.
From 2002-09, Sister Teresa Marie was a tutor at the former Notre Dame Tutorial/Learning Center at Sancta Maria in Ripa. During the next five years, she performed community service at Theresa Center in south St. Louis County. Until her death, she served in prayer and presence at Veronica House, The Sarah Community.
Burial was in Sancta Maria in Ripa Cemetery. Survivors include her sister, Loretta Mooney, and her brother, John Hinrichs.
