Obituary | Sr. Mary Paule Vardigan, DC
A funeral Mass for Sister Mary Paule Vardigan was celebrated Nov. 18 at The Sarah Community Marian Chapel in Bridgeton. Sister Mary Paule died Nov. 13 at The Sarah Community. She was 101 years old and a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul for 83 years.
Born in Wells, Mich., she entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in 1936 and received her nurse’s training at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chicago. She received a bachelor’s degree in nursing education from Louisiana State University in New Orleans in 1946. She did postgraduate studies at Marillac College in St. Louis from 1973-74 and served as pastoral associate at DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton from 1981-86.
Sister Mary Paule served as a medical/surgical nursing supervisor, pediatrics nursing instructor, patient visitor and in hospital chaplaincy in New Orleans. She was a nursing supervisor in Chicago, Alton, Ill., and Dallas. She served in pastoral care at hospitals in Kansas City, Mo., and in Texas. Following retirement, she lived in New Orleans, Evansville, Ind., and at the Sarah Community in Bridgeton.
Survivors include a sister, Frances “Patsy” Johns. Burial was in Marillac Cemetery in Normandy.
