Obituary | Sr. Annalee Faherty, DC
A funeral Mass for Sister Annalee Faherty was celebrated Dec. 23 at The Sarah Community Marian Chapel in Bridgeton. Sister Annalee died Dec. 19 at The Sarah Community. She was 83 and served 65 years as a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul.
Born in Perryville, she was a 1954 graduate of St. Vincent High School in Perryville and entered the Daughters of Charity that fall. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Marillac College in St. Louis in 1964 and a master’s degree in social work from Saint Louis University in 1966.
After completing her initial formation, Sister Annalee moved to Mobile, Ala., where she served as a housemother at St. Mary’s Home, and as an elementary schoolteacher. In 1961, she began teaching at St. Louise de Marillac School in St. Louis. She began serving at Guardian Angel Settlement Association in St. Louis in 1966 as a caseworker. She served as a supervisor for Stella Maris Day Care Center in St. Louis from 1968-69. During this time, Sister Annalee served on the faculty at Marillac College in St. Louis and was a coordinator for the college’s social work program. Sister Annalee also served as associate professor and chair of the social work department at Marillac College from 1970-74.
Sister Annalee lived on the sixth floor of public housing at the Darst-Webbe complex south of Downtown St. Louis with 10 other Daughters of Charity. Guardian Angel moved to the housing complex in 1963 and later to Holy Angels Parish down the street from the complex. She started a food pantry in a double-door cabinet at her office with the help of the mother of the city’s mayor who was the president of the Ladies of Charity group at St. Vincent Parish in south St. Louis.
Sister Annalee later served as a social worker in pastoral ministry and as local community superior in West Plains, Mo., and as administrator at a home in Austin, Texas. She returned to the Guardian Angel Settlement Association in St. Louis, serving for nearly 30 years as a social worker and director of social services and social programs from 1989 to 2018 when she moved to The Sarah Community. In an article in the St. Louis Review in 2014, Guardian Angels staff called her the face of the agency, a “consistent, loving and generous person.”
Sister Annalee served on the following boards in St. Louis: Chouteau/Russell Neighborhood Organization, Guardian Angel Settlement and FEMA. She also served on several nonprofit boards in Texas.
Sister Annalee served in St. Louis as local community superior of the De Paul group at the former Marillac Provincial House (1990 to 1992) and of the St. Louise group at the former Marillac Provincial House (1992). She served as local community superior at the Olive Residence in St. Louis (2006 to 2012).
Survivors include her sister, Carol Rousseau of Perryville. Burial was in Marillac Cemetery in Normandy.
