OBITUARY | Sister Winifred Mary Sullivan, SP

A funeral Mass for Sister Winifred Mary Sullivan was celebrated Dec. 17 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on the motherhouse grounds of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. Sister Winifred, a Sister of Providence, died Dec. 3 at Mother Theodore Hall in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was 94 years old.

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Sister Winifred entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1945, and professed her final vows on Jan. 23, 1953. She earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master’s degree from Saint Louis University.

In her 76 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 45 years as a teacher in schools in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland and Missouri, serving as principal for seven of those years. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, she served as a teacher and principal at Annunziata School from 1960-66.

She also ministered at schools in Indiana, Illinois and Maryland. After her retirement in 1993, she remained in Jasper, Indiana, serving as a tutor and volunteer. In 2008, she came to the motherhouse where she served her sisters in a variety of ways, in particular doing quilting and other delicate work for Linden Leaf Gifts

She is survived by a sister, Rita Paitson of Vincennes, Indiana. Burial was in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
