A memorial Mass for Sister Patricia Hall (formerly Sister M. Rosemond) was celebrated July 28 at the Theresa Center Chapel at Sancta Maria in Ripa in St. Louis. Sister Pat died July 13 at Anna House-The Sarah Community in Bridgeton. The School Sister of Notre Dame was 89 years old.
The third of four children, she was born to Marie (Rice) and Kenneth Hall on Nov. 16, 1936, in St. Louis. She was baptized on Dec. 6, 1936, at Epiphany Church and named Patricia Ann. A sister and two brothers completed the Hall family.
Patricia attended Epiphany School for two years. She then attended Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and Notre Dame High School, where she was taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The example of her SSND teachers inspired within her a call to religious life.
She entered the candidature at Sancta Maria in Ripa on Sept. 2, 1954. She was received into the novitiate on Aug. 2, 1955, and given the name Sister Mary Rosemond. She professed first vows on Aug. 3, 1956, and final vows on Aug. 3, 1962. Later, she returned to her baptismal name and preferred to be called Sister Pat.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the former Notre Dame College in St. Louis in 1964; a master’s degree in library science from Rosary College in River Forest, Illinois, in 1971 and a master’s degree in religious studies from Saint Louis University in 1980.
Sister Pat taught elementary children at St. Joseph in Farmington (1956-61) and Our Lady of Loretto (1961-63) and St. Francis de Sales (1963-66) in St. Louis. She was a librarian and teacher at Notre Dame High School in Burlington, Iowa (1966-70) and St. Francis Borgia High School in Washington (1970-74).
While ministering in Washington, she participated with adults in “Living Room Dialogs” and recognized a call to adult faith formation. She served in this ministry at St. Joseph in Manchester (1974-77) and Seven Holy Founders in Affton (1984-89 and 1992-93).
In 1977, she was asked to establish and develop the Media Center for Religious Education in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. During this time, she was a member of the Religious Education Department, often assisting in sacramental preparation. While serving with the archdiocesan committee for Christian Initiation, she established the Office for the Catechumenate for the archdiocese. This office provided resources and opportunities for the implementation of the new document on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). She served in those roles from 1977-84 and again from 1989-93.
After a sabbatical in 1993, Sister Pat spent several months at the Catholic Center in Springfield, Missouri. She served in pastoral ministry at St. Patrick Parish in Rolla, Missouri (1994-99), Sacred Heart Parish in Columbia, Missouri (1999-2009) and at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Springfield (2009-19). While in Springfield, she served on the bishop’s commission of ongoing dialog of Roman Catholics and Pentecostals.
In 2019, Sister Pat moved to Sancta Maria in Ripa. She volunteered in the library and served in various other areas of community service. As her health failed, she retired to Veronica House-The Sarah Community in Bridgeton in May 2024. She transferred to Anna House in January 2026 and celebrated her 70-year jubilee of religious profession with the community there in April 2026.
Sister Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Kenneth Hall; her sister, Barbara Tarantola; and her brothers, Kenneth and David. She is survived by nieces, nephews, extended family members, sisters in community, SSND associates and friends. Burial of cremains was in the Sancta Maria in Ripa cemetery.
