Obituary | Sister Mary Ursula McGann, OSU
The funeral Mass for Sister Mary Ursula McGann, OSU, was celebrated July 5 at St. Peter Church in Kirkwood. Sister Ursula died June 27 at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis. She was 86 and had been a professed Ursuline Sister for 61 years.
Born Dec. 30, 1931, in Electra, Texas, she entered the Ursuline Sisters in July 1954 and professed vows in January 1957. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Our Lady of the Lake College in Baton Rouge, La., and a master’s degree in theology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.
A beloved teacher, Sister Ursula taught many years at Ursuline Academy in Galveston and in San Antonio, and at Villa Maria Academy in Frontenac, Minn. She also served in finance for the Ursuline’s Central Province. She was bursar for Springfield College in Springfield, Ill, and treasurer for many Ursuline communities, including those in Jennings, San Antonio and Dallas; and the Ursuline Interprovincial Novitiate Community in Chicago. She also was bookkeeper for the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio.
In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, she was registrar for Cardinal Ritter Preparatory High School (1981-86). She also served on the Central Province leadership team at the Ursuline Provincialate in Crystal City (1978-81).
Sister Ursula is survived by a sister, Ann Trahant.
