A Mass of the Resurrection for Sister Mary Hagele, RSCJ, was celebrated Aug. 8 at the Shrine of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne in St. Charles. Sister Mary died July 30 in St. Louis. She was 84 years old.
Mary Hagele was born on Jan. 3, 1942, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Herbert Christian Hagele and Katherine Helen (Freund) Hagele. She had one brother.
In 1962, Mary entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood Convent in Albany, New York. She pronounced first vows in 1965 and renewed her vows in 1968. She made her final profession in 1972. She completed her undergraduate degrees in philosophy and theology at Maryville College (1965-67). She also volunteered at Pruitt-Igoe Public Housing in St. Louis, making family visits and tutoring adults for GED programs.
After she graduated from Maryville, Sister Mary moved to Cincinnati where she taught at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Clifton for three years. She earned a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Northwestern University a master’s in religious education from Seattle University and a doctorate of psychology from the Chicago School of Psychology.
She served as a staff psychologist in hospital settings before opening a private practice in the 1990s.
Sister Mary retired in 2022 and joined The Sarah Community in Bridgeton, where she continued to be active in ministry.
Sister Mary is survived by her nieces and their families, Teresa Hagele, Veronica Leach, Elizabeth Quarantiello and Catherine Putnam.
