OBITUARY | Sister Darlene Huck, CPPS

A funeral Mass for Sister Darlene Huck, CPPS, was celebrated Jan. 25 at St. Joseph Chapel in O’Fallon. Sister Darlene died Jan. 19 at the age of 84.

Darlene Agnes Huck was born on Aug. 3, 1937, in Bloomsdale, the 10th of 12 children of Joseph and Gertrude (Drury) Huck. Following close behind was her twin sister, Marlene, the 11th of the 12.

Darlene entered the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood’s novitiate in 1954 and received the name Sister Caelestia. She professed first vows on Aug. 10, 1956. Her twin sister Marlene also entered the Sisters of the Most Precious Blood. She completed a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Quincy College in Quincy, Illinois.

An excellent and creative elementary teacher, Sister Darlene taught at St. Charles Academy in Stratton, Colorado; St. Mary in Glasgow; Holy Family, St. George, St. John the Baptist and St. Nicholas in St. Louis; St. Rose in Quincy; St. Vincent in Dutzow; Assumption in O’Fallon; and St. Patrick in Wentzville.

After 28 years of teaching, Sister Darlene, along with her sister, Sister Marlene, began serving in parish ministry. Their first assignment included simultaneous service at Sacred Heart Parish in Willow Springs, Sacred Heart Parish in Mountain Grove, St. Joseph Parish in White Church, Pomona, and St. Michael Church in Cabool.

Sisters Darlene and Marlene went on to serve among the rural poor at Christ the Healer Parish in Edmonton, Kentucky. From Edmonton, they moved to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Tennessee Ridge, Tennessee.

In 1999, Sister Darlene responded to the community’s request to become co-webmaster, along with Sister Marlene, for the community’s new website.

Sister Darlene is survived by Sister Marlene and their brother, Duane.
