OBITUARY | Father Michael J. Sandweg


A funeral Mass for Father Michael J. Sandweg will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at St. Ann Church in Normandy. Father Sandweg died Jan. 27 at Mother of Good Counsel Home in Northwoods. He was 73 years old.
Born in St. Louis on March 5, 1951, to Gerard and Jane (Dunn) Sandweg, he was baptized at St. Rita Church in Vinita Park. He attended CBC High School, Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary. Cardinal John J. Carberry ordained him to the priesthood on May 26, 1979, at the Cathedral of Saint Louis.
Father Sandweg was named an associate pastor at St. Andrew in Lemay (1979-80). He was assigned to teach at St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis and Duchesne High School in St. Charles. While teaching, he was a part-time associate pastor at St. Simon in Concord Village (1980-81), St. Pius V in St. Louis (1981-82) and St. Peter in St. Charles (1982-84).
Father Sandweg was named associate pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Bellefontaine Neighbors (1984-89), St. John the Baptist in St. Louis (1989-91), St. Kevin in St. Ann (1991-93).
In 1993, he was named administrator of St. Francis in Portage des Sioux and the following year became pastor. He served at the parish until his retirement in 2010. For many years, he blessed boats as part of the Blessing of the Fleet, an annual event on the Mississippi River in front of the Shrine Of Our Lady of the Rivers in Portage des Sioux.
Father Sandweg moved to Mother of Good Counsel Home in 2022.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
