OBITUARY | Father James Sullivan

A funeral Mass for Father James Sullivan will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Incarnate Word Church in Chesterfield. Visitation will be in the church at 9 a.m. Father Sullivan died April 15 at age 84.

He was born on Aug. 15, 1940, to William Anthony and Mary (Lawler) Sullivan in St. Louis. He was baptized on Sept. 8, 1940, at St. Margaret of Scotland Church. He attended St. Louis Prep Seminary, Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary.

He was ordained a priest on March 26, 1966, by then-Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter at the St. Louis Cathedral. His first assignment was at Corpus Christi in Jennings (1966-71). He then served as associate pastor of St. Simon in Concord Village (1971-76), St. Jerome in Bissell Hills (1976-81), St. Gregory in St. Ann (1981-85) and St. Timothy in Affton (1985-87).

In 1987, he was named pastor of Holy Family in Port Hudson and St. Gerald in Gerald. He then served as pastor of Our Lady of Mercy in Hazelwood from 1999-2005, after which he became senior associate pastor at Incarnate Word in Chesterfield. He retired in 2017, with continued residence at Incarnate Word. He moved to Regina Cleri in 2022 and Mother of Good Counsel Home in 2025.
