Father Bernard Schloemer died Nov. 14 at Mary Queen and Mother Home in Shrewsbury. He was 89 years old and a priest for 63 years.
He was born on Nov. 29, 1933, in Jennings to Bernard and Augusta (Rotter) Schloemer. He was baptized Dec. 10, 1933, at Corpus Christi Parish in Jennings. He attended St. Louis Prep Seminary, Cardinal Glennon College and Kenrick Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood on April 2, 1960, at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis by then-Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter.
His first assignment was at St. Cecilia in Kennett, Missouri, where he served from 1960-62 as part of the Missionary Apostolate Plan in the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. He then returned to the Archdiocese of St. Louis and served as associate pastor at St. Agatha in St. Louis (1962-70), St. Adalbert in St. Louis (1970-73) and Assumption in O’Fallon (1973-79). In 1979, he was appointed pastor of St. Joachim in Old Mines (1979-81), followed by Most Precious Blood in Lemay (1981-91) and St. Justin Martyr in Sunset Hills (1991-2004).
In 2004, Father Schloemer became senior parochial vicar at St. Gabriel the Archangel in St. Louis and continued there as a senior priest in residence following his retirement in 2008. He moved to Regina Cleri residence for retired priests in 2014, and later, Mary Queen and Mother Home in Shrewsbury.
Father Schloemer was active in a number of organizations, including as a member of the board of directors of Doorways and the Archdiocesan Health Committee.
