OBITUARY | Father Albert A. Mattler

A memorial Mass for Father Albert A. Mattler will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, at Seven Holy Founders Church in Affton. Father Mattler died March 26 at the age of 96. He was the oldest archdiocesan priest at the time of his death.
Born in St. Louis on Feb. 4, 1930, Father Mattler was the son of Albert and Alberta (Sucher) Mattler. He attended Cathedral Latin School, Passionist Preparatory Seminary, St. Louis Preparatory Seminary and Kenrick Seminary. Then-Archbishop Joseph E. Ritter ordained him at the Cathedral of Saint Louis on March 17, 1956.
Father Mattler served as an assistant pastor at Holy Cross in St. Louis (1956-57) and Corpus Christi in Jennings (1957-58), St. Joseph in Clayton (1963-68), and St. Philip Neri in St. Louis (part time, 1958-63). He also was an associate pastor at St. Jude in Overland (part time, 1968-74).
He taught at several schools including Blessed Sacrament School, De Andreis High School and Mercy High School.
Father Mattler served as pastor of Holy Martyrs of Japan in Japan (1974-81), Immaculate Conception in St. Mary (1981-87), St. Clare in St. Clair (1987-94) and St. Theodore in Flint Hill (1994-2006).
In 2006, he was named senior associate pastor at St. Simon in Green Park, where he served until his retirement in 2010. He most recently had been in residence at St. Agnes Home in Kirkwood.
Father Mattler donated his body to science.
