Peter & Paul emergency shelter expansion
Peter & Paul Community Services celebrated the opening of the new Jugan Shelter during its State of the Agency address Sept. 25. It is the culmination of a multi-year effort to expand year-round shelter capacity in the St. Louis area through the development of its Peter & Paul Community Campus in north St. Louis. The newly completed Jugan Shelter provides space for 100 men to receive shelter and access supportive services, including case management, employment resources, occupational therapy and more.
Food security summit
“From Hunger to Hope,” a food security summit, will be held Thursday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury. The event is for volunteers and community leaders to address the root causes of hunger and explore how to provide sustainable, dignified access to food for all in our region. Participants will hear from speakers, learn about best practices from food pantry leaders, explore successful models for community gardens and advocacy campaigns and have the opportunity to network with others. Sponsors include Catholic Relief Services’ local advisory board, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Operation Food Search, the St. Louis Area Food Bank and the Community Impact Network. Mothers’ and fathers’ retreats
Gabriel’s Retreat Ministries will host its next Gabriel’s Retreat for mothers from Oct. 17-19 at the Augustine Institute in north St. Louis County. Gabriel’s Retreats are designed for mothers facing any kind of unexpectedness in her pregnancy, new motherhood or postpartum. The next Michael’s Retreat for fathers expecting a child or new fathers with children 2 years old and younger will be held Nov. 14-16 at Il Ritiro Retreat Center in Dittmer. Vatican correspondent book discussion
Vatican correspondent and St. Louis native Colleen Dulle will share reflections from her debut book, “Struck Down, Not Destroyed: Keeping the Faith as a Vatican Reporter,” at a discussion from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Visitation Academy, 3020 North Ballas Road in Town & Country. Dulle is a Vatican correspondent for America magazine and host of the “Inside the Vatican” podcast. She is a 2013 alum of Visitation Academy and a former St. Louis Review intern. Festival Choir
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis and the Archdiocese of Saint Louis invite parish adult choirs, youth choirs (grades 4-12) and school choir members to participate in a Festival Choir on Saturday, Nov. 22, for the celebration of St. Cecilia, patroness of musicians. The Mass will honor all musicians of the archdiocese and includes a blessing for musicians at the conclusion of the liturgy.
