Tenebrae at Sacred Heart Florissant

April 1 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Free

On Wednesday night of Holy Week, join us at 6:30pm in a beautiful chanted service originating in the 9th century. The word “Tenebrae” means “shadows.” This tradition features Matins and Lauds chanted in Latin in a darkened church, interspersed with readings reflecting on the passion of Christ, while 15 candles are gradually extinguished, one after each Psalm, until only one remains. The service lasts about two hours, so feel free to arrive late or leave early as your schedule permits. While a program with the full text will be provided, there is no requirement to follow along or to stay the whole time. On the eve of the Triduum, we hope you will be able to join us in prayerful stillness and experience the deep riches of the Church’s musical tradition.
