A memorial Mass for Sister Joan Bartin, OP, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at St. Catherine Laboure Church in Sappington. Sister Joan, a Dominican Sister of Sparkill, New York, died Aug. 19 in Siena Hall at the Dominican Convent in Sparkill. She was 95 years old.
Born in St. Louis on Jan. 27, 1931, Mary Joan was the daughter of John and Helen Bawn Bartin. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on Sept. 8, 1952, and received the name Sister John Louise. She professed her first vows in 1954 and final vows in 1959.
Sister Joan received a bachelor’s degree in education from Webster College (now University) in 1960 and a master’s of religious education from St. Thomas University in Houston in 1975.
Sister Joan served in the Archdiocese of St. Louis at Holy Redeemer School in Webster Groves (1954-65, 1972-1975); Epiphany of Our Lord School in St. Louis (1965-68); Little Flower School in Richmond Heights (1968-69); St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Brentwood (1969-72); Immaculate Conception Parish in St. Louis (1975-79); and as a campus minister at Washington University in St. Louis (1979-80). From 1980 until 2009, Sister Joan served the Native American community in the Diocese of Helena, Montana, as pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Mission.
Sister Joan is predeceased by her parents, John and Helen Bawn Bartin, and her brothers, Thomas, John and Robert. She is survived by her sister-in-law Marianne, nephews, nieces and her Dominican Sisters, Associates and friends.
