OBITUARY | Sister Diane Kane, OP

A memorial Mass for Sister Diane Kane, OP, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at St. Catherine Laboure Church, 9740 Sappington Road in Sappington.
Sister Diane of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, New York, died on Dec. 14 in Siena Hall at the Dominican Convent in Sparkill. She was 91 years old.
Mary Ellen Kane was born in St. Louis on April 25, 1934, the daughter of John and Agnes (Langton) Kane. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on Sept. 8, 1952, and received the name Sister Diane. Sister Diane professed her first vows in 1954 and her final vows in 1959.
Sister Diane received a bachelor’s degree in education from Webster College in St. Louis in 1961 and a master’s degree in Spanish literature from Saint Louis University in 1971.
In the St. Louis Archdiocese, Sister Diane ministered at Holy Redeemer School (1954-59), St. Elizabeth School (1959-64) and St. Mark High School (1964-71), all in St. Louis.
She was a student at Aquinas Institute of Theology in Dubuque, Iowa (1971-72), and served as director of formation for the Sparkill Dominican Sisters (1972-75).
She was involved in pastoral care ministry at St. Elizabeth Parish in New York (1975-83); chaplain at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Belleville, Illinois (1983-90), a case manager at St. Patrick Center in St. Louis (1990- 2001) and at St. Louis Regional (1999-2005), and she was involved in elder care ministry for the Sisters of St. Joseph in St. Louis (2005-11).
Sister Diane was preceded in death by her parents, John and Agnes Kane. She is survived by her sisters, Sister Kathleen Kane, OP, and Geraldine (John) Brown; her brothers, Michael (Mary) and Eugene (Johanna); and her beloved nieces, nephews, Dominican Sisters, associates and friends.
