November 2008 Arrival in Athens: The journey begins Upon arrival in Athens, I immediately hopped on a direct flight north to Thessaloniki. Perhaps a sign of what was in store for me on this journey following in the footsteps of St. Paul with a group of Catholic journalists from the United States was my observation of two middle-aged Greek women sitting next to me on the flight. A wonder to behold: the Monasteries of Meteora Wandering through the countryside in central mainland Greece, its hard to miss the splendor of Meteora a towering cluster of rock formations considered one of the most significant natural monuments in the country. Delphi: The 'navel' of the world On our way to Athens, we made a stop in Delphi, a modern town located roughly in the southern part of mainland Greece and a little over 100 miles northwest of Athens. Ephesus: The House of the Virgin Mary On our way to Ephesus, Turkey, to see where St. Paul preached the Gospel message, our group made an early morning stop to the site where the Blessed Mother was believed to have lived the last years of her life, until her Assumption into Heaven. |
