Best in state

Connor Hopkins, a first-grader at Sts. Joachim and Ann School in St. Charles, is the 2008 Missouri State Handwriting Winner in the National Handwriting Contest sponsored by Zaner-Bloser Educational Publishers. Connor will compete against other state winners in the upcoming national competition.

Book signing

Msgr. Nicholas Schneider has two upcoming signings of his book, "Joseph Elmer Cardinal Ritter: His Life and Times." Both are on Saturday, May 17. From 10 a.m. to noon Msgr. Schneider will be at Catholic Supply, 6759 Chippewa St. in South St. Louis, and from 2 to 4 p.m. at Pauline Books and Media, 9804 Watson Road in Crestwood.

Hot wheels

Christian Brothers College High School will hosts the third annual CBC Car Show from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10, on the school grounds, 1850 DeLaSalle Drive in Town and Country. Entries are $10 for students, $15 for drive-ups. Spectators are free. Judging will be held in 14 classes, with classes determined at pre-registration. What’s brewing?

St. Monica’s Young Adults Coffee House will hold its monthly get-together from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at St. Monica Parish, 12136 Olive Blvd. in Creve Coeur. The event will be in Msgr. Schneider Hall. Carl Sommer, RCIA director at St. Monica Parish, will discuss "Peter Among Us: The Ministry of the Papacy in the Life of the Church." The event is free, but donations are welcome. Promoting marriage

Rene and JoAnn Lusser, members of St. Clare of Assisi Parish in Ellisville, have been elected new board members for Section 7, covering five Midwest states, of Worldwide Marriage Encounter. Their terms are for three years. Worldwide Marriage Encounter is celebrating its 40th anniversary at its International Convention in Ontario, Calif., the weekend of June 27-29. Distinguished alumna

Ruth Roetheli Ehresman of St. Pius V Parish in South St. Louis has received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University. She has worked for many social justice causes over the years as a policy analyst, educator, advocate and neighborhood activist. The policy director of Citizens for Missouri’s Children for 11 years, she has directed health and budgetary policy at the Missouri Budget Project since 2005. She is also active in St. Pius V’s music ministry.

Serving the needy

Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Soulard has honored Lou Michael and his late wife, Rose Michael, for their years of service to the parish and those in need by organizing and operating its meals program. On April 27 Father Bruce Foreman, the pastor, dedicated the parish hall cafeteria in honor of the couple at a luncheon. It is now called the Rose Room. The executive director of Peter and Paul Community Services, Steve Campbell, presented Lou Michael with a Lifetime Achievement Award in honor of the couple’s service to the homeless. The parish’s meals program, with its many volunteers, serves more than 25,000 meals to people in need.

Fonts of wisdom

The Greater St. Louis Chapter of the Catholic Library Association has presented its annual Fons Sapientiae (Font of Wisdom) Award to Martin and Mae Duggan of St. Monica Parish in Creve Coeur for "their wise and meritorious contributions to St. Louis journalism and the Catholic way of life." The award has gone to local "wise leaders" in the St. Louis area since 1974. The library association presented the award at its spring conference at Villa Duchesne/Oak Hill School April 26.

Rockin’ for good cause

The recent performances of the musical "Schoolhouse Rock Live Too!" by Take Two Productions at the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury raised $1,500 for the Maggie Welby Foundation. The foundation, begun by parents of a 7-year-old girl in her memory, awards scholarships to local students.

Global Day of Prayer

The Global Day of Prayer will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 11, at Busch Stadium in Downtown St. Louis. The ecumenical event is free, but an offering will be collected to benefit St. Patrick Center’s Key Player Initiative to help the homeless. For information go to www.praystl.org.

Groundbreaking

St. Louis University High School was to have held a groundbreaking ceremony May 7 for construction of its new Student Activity Center. SLUH is a Jesuit-run school for boys at 4970 Oakland Ave. south of Forest Park in St. Louis. The new activity center will be a three-level complex of more than 40,000 square feet. BSI Constructors Inc. is the contractor, and Hastings Chavetta is the architect. The approximately $10 million project is the culmination of the school’s Vision 2000 development program.

New principal

Judy Mohan is the new principal of Rosati-Kain High School in the Central West End, effective the 2008-2009 school year. Mohan, a graduate of Rosati-Kain and member of St. Stephen Protomartyr Parish in South St. Louis, has been an educator at Visitation Academy for 20 years. She succeeds Sister Joan Andert, SSND, the current principal, who will remain at Rosati-Kain as president.

Pro-life license plate

Missouri residents can now support pro-life efforts with the new Choose Life license plate. Proceeds of license plate sales will benefit adoption efforts, pregnancy resource centers and maternity centers. Go to www.chooselifemis souri.org.

Credit for Marian

Marian Middle School in South St. Louis has been awarded $39,400 in Youth Opportunities Program tax credits from the Missouri Department of Economic Development.

Super students

Cor Jesu Academy has placed third in the state at the 2008 Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis Mock Trial Competition, held recently in St. Charles. Cor Jesu’s Team Red members are Laura Clayton, Amanda Nehrkorn, Elizabeth Kiesewetter, Genevieve Bourneuf, Elizabeth Demse, Veronica Merz and Abigail Nehrkorn. Moderator is Jen Ahrens. Cor Jesu parent-coach is Mark Kiesewetter.

The Varsity Chess Team from St. John Vianney High School placed second at the U.S. Chess Federation National Championship in the K-12 under 1200 rating. The tournament was held April 18-20 in Atlanta. Top Vianney players were Tim Kilper, Kyle Tuberty, Andrew Robinson, John Gist and Andrew Venable. The Vianney Junior Varsity Chess Team placed fifth in the K-12 under 800 rating. Chess team moderator is Ed Bauer.

Four students at Valle Catholic High School in Ste. Genevieve are recipients of the Sophomore Warriors scholarships, $500 scholarships given by an anonymous donor to eligible students going into their sophomore year. The students are Kelly Brown, Elizabeth McClure, Lindsey Orr and Michael Loida.

LaTayisah Pohtos, an eighth-grader at Sacred Heart School in Florissant, has been awarded the $2,500 Darrik Sabada Memorial Scholarship. The award, renewable for all four years of high school, is in memory of Darrik Sabada, who died of cardiac arrhythmia in 1999. LaTayisah will attend Rosati-Kain High School.

Ryan Young, a senior at St. John Vianney High School in Kirkwood, has received an appointment to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Ryan is a member of the Math Honor Society, a consistent Honor Roll member, an athlete and a musician. He plans to pursue pilot training in the Air Force.

Pauline Books events

Two events will be held at Pauline Books and Media, 9804 Watson Road in Crestwood. At 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, Jesuit Father John Kavanaugh, St. Louis University philosophy professor and director of ethics across the curriculum, will speak on "The Dignity of Persons." At 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17, the Pauline Faith and Family Night will feature the family friendly film "Evan Almighty," with a discussion following.
