Jesuits at the shrine

Old St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant will host Jesuit Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. Tours of the historic shrine available, and the event will focus on the influence of the Jesuits in the North St. Louis County area. Several speakers will provide information, and Jesuit artifacts will be on display, including a robe that belonged to pioneer Jesuit Father Pierre DeSmet. Information will also be available on St. Rose Philippine Duchesne. Both Father DeSmet and St. Philippine lived at the shrine. There is no admission fee. Tops in science

Melissa Rey, a freshman at John F. Kennedy Catholic High School, is one of 10 national finalists in the 2008 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Participants put together a two-minute video on a science topic — Melissa’s video was "The Doppler Effect." The 10 finalists will compete in Washington, D.C., in October for a top prize of a $50,000 savings bond and the title "America’s Top Young Scientist of the Year." Melissa, a member of Incarnate Word Parish in Chesterfield, heard about the Discovery competition through her membership in the junior Academy of Science of St. Louis.

Festa di Santa Fara

La Festa di Santa Fara, celebrating the patron saint of Cinisi, Sicily, will be Sunday, Sept. 14, on the Hill, the predominately Italian neighborhood of South St. Louis. La Festa di Santa Fara benefits St. Ambrose Parish on the Hill and the Church of Santa Fara in Cinisi. The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with a procession leaving from St. Ambrose Church, 5130 Wilson Ave. A statue of Santa Fara will be carried in the procession, which will end with 11 a.m. Mass back at the church. Dinner will be held at 5 p.m. at the Falls Banquet Center in Columbia, Ill. Maryknollers to meet

The St. Louis Chapter of the Maryknoll Affiliates will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, in the parish center of St. Justin Martyr, 11922 Eddie and Park Road in Sunset Hills. Fred Goddard, executive coordinator of the Maryknoll Affiliates, will be the guest speaker. The affiliates, the newest branch of Maryknoll, include people of all ages and backgrounds interested in mission and global issues. Catholic Supply news

Catholic Supply of St. Louis will hold the grand opening of its new store in O’Fallon on Saturday, Sept. 6. The event is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the store, 2953 Highway K, at Highway N near Dierbergs, and gifts will be given to the first 20 guests as well as the first 100 children. At Catholic Supply’s store in St. Louis Hills, 6759 Chippewa Ave., Father John Jay Hughes will sign copies of his new book, "No Ordinary Fool: A Testimony of Grace," from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 6.

Adoption news

Dillion International will present a workshop on international adoption from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 13014 Olive Blvd. in Creve Coeur. Staff members will discuss adoptions from China, India, South Korea and Haiti. The fee is $100 per couple or $90 per single person, including lunch. To register call (314) 576-4100.

Librarians to meet

The Catholic Library Association will hold its fall social meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary library in Shrewsbury. Paul M. Pearson, director and archivist of the Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University in Louisville, Ky., will give an overview of the Merton Center and other archival collections of Merton’s materials.
